The modern dog is a descendant of the grey wolf. Dogs were one of the first animals that mankind domesticated. This domestication was probably a marriage of convenience in its earliest stages. The hunter gatherer society and the wolf pack shared some common bonds that aided in the domestication process. Both the early human society and the wolf pack were social hierarchies. They were both nomadic over the same areas, and both hunted the same prey.

There are a few theories as to how dogs became domesticated. One proposes that because wolves were scavengers, they would be attracted to the scraps that humans left from their kills. The wolves that were most successful were those that tolerated human presence, because they could get more scraps. Eventually this led to wolves that could eat in the presence of humans, which is the key to domestication. Another theory sets forth the argument that humans would nurse orphaned wolf cubs, and that the domestic dog was the descendant of those cubs breeding in captivity. Regardless of how it happened, the domestication of the dog has provided a companion for mankind for millennia. We offered them food and safety, they guarded us, shared in our burdens, and helped us hunt. Everyone was better off in the arrangement.

Today, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of breeds of dogs. You can find anything from a tiny white Chihuahua to a massive brown Great Dane. There are a myriad of coat patterns, heads, tails, and bodies. This has been the result of untold generations of careful breeding. Dogs were specially bred for specific tasks. Huskies were bred to haul heavy loads; Setters were bred to be hunting aids. Doberman and Mastiffs were bred as guard dogs, and Collies were bred to help herd sheep. Just about every modern dog breed has an historic ancestry that hearkens back to a task they were meant to perform.

Keeping any dog requires that you have the proper tools to feed, groom, and exercise them. Without those three things, a dog is prone to all manner of health problems, from obesity, to arthritis, many of the health issues a dog can encounter are shared with humans. Other health problems, such as tape worms or heart worms are specific to dogs. That’s not to say a human couldn’t get worms, but we’re less likely to eat something that’s been lying around in the sun for a few days than a dog is.

Dog ownership brings much more joy than responsibility; and having a pet dog has been shown to be good for the health of the owner. In fact, patients struggling with a life threatening illness fare far better emotionally and physically if they have a pet. The ability to focus on something other than the illness is what enables them to pull through. Even among the average human, owning a dog has been shown to decrease the chance of depression, increase the feeling of connectedness with one’s community, and help a person be more active.

You can buy pet supplies from a local pet store, from your local grocery store, or on an online pet store. One of the many reasons that people shop online, is because there are more varieties and options for supplies. Pet costumes have become very popular lately; local stores dont carry as many products as online retailers.
