Dog Clothes

There are two types of dog clothes, functional and aesthetic. Yes, there are actually functional clothing items. Imagine for a moment that you want to go backpacking. Well, no trip into the wild would be complete without your dog, but that brings up an issue. A dog in the wild needs some basic care items, and if you’re backpacking odds are you’re already full on stuff for yourself.

That’s where functional dog clothes come into play. There are saddle bags designed to strap around a dog that allow your pooch to carry his own food, his bed, or anything else you can fit into the bags. It’s important to acclimatize your dog to the new clothes though. More than the fit, a dog needs to adjust to the weight of the bags.

One solution is to have the dog clothes on for a week or so before the trip. If you fill the bags with items like canned goods that are durable and have some weight to them; your dog will get used to the additional weight and girth the bags have. Then when you put them on at the trailhead your dog won’t go nuts because of the unfamiliar sensation of a loaded pack.
